These fish are distributed in the Americas, ranging from the southern United States to Brazil, including various Caribbean islands. Notable for their robust and somewhat cylindrical bodies, they possess large, upward-facing mouths and exhibit a preference for muddy or sandy substrates where they can bury themselves.
