Auks, Murres, and Puffins [Alcidae]

Description

Alcidae, the family that includes auks, murres, and puffins, consists of seabirds that are primarily found in the northern hemisphere. These birds are adapted to cold seas through their plumage, which is typically black on the upperparts and white on the underparts, aiding in camouflage against the water from above and below. Alcidae members are excellent swimmers, using their wings to 'fly' underwater while pursuing fish. They typically nest in large colonies on coastal cliffs, laying a single egg on the bare rock.
