Oysters [Ostreida]

Description

Ostreida is an order of marine bivalve molluscs that includes the true oysters. Oysters have a highly calcified, irregularly shaped shell and are known for their ecological and economic importance. They form beds or reefs that provide habitat for a variety of marine life and are key players in water filtration. Many species are cultivated for food, and some are known to produce pearls. Oysters are sessile as adults, attaching to rocks or other hard substrates in coastal waters.
