Windowpane Oysters [Placunidae]
Description
The Placunidae family, known as windowpane oysters, consists of species with very flat, translucent shells. They are not true oysters but share some similarities. These bivalves are often found in shallow, tropical marine waters and are named for their shells' resemblance to panes of glass. Windowpane oysters are particularly noted for their use in decorative objects, as their shells can be used as a natural glass substitute. Some species within this family are also harvested for food.
