Feather Oysters [Pteriidae]
Description
The Pteriidae family, also known as feather oysters, includes a variety of species that are known for their colorful and iridescent inner shell layer, nacre, also known as mother-of-pearl. These bivalves attach themselves to substrates using a byssus, a bundle of fibrous threads. Feather oysters can be found in warmer seas globally and include species that are of commercial interest for pearl cultivation. Their shells can be quite large and ornate, with some species used in jewelry and decoration.
