Saddle Oysters [Anomiidae]
Description
Anomiidae, or saddle oysters, are a family of bivalve mollusks that attach themselves to rocks, shells, and corals by means of a calcareous cementation of the lower valve. They are characterized by their thin, irregular shells, which often have a hole or notch for the byssal threads that pass through to anchor the animal. Saddle oysters can be found in oceans around the world and have a unique ability to adjust their position slightly over time.
