Cockles [Cardiida]

Description

The Cardiida order comprises marine bivalve molluscs known as cockles. Cockles are distinguished by their rounded, heart-shaped shells with radiating ribs. They are commonly found in sandy, coastal environments where they burrow close to the surface. Cockles are filter feeders, and their siphons can often be seen protruding from the sand. They are a popular food source in many cultures and are harvested both commercially and recreationally.
