Giant Clams [Tridacnidae]

Description

Tridacnidae, or giant clams, are a family of large saltwater clams with heavy, ornate shells. They are the largest living bivalve molluscs and are found in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific region. These clams are known for their symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae (zooxanthellae), which live in their tissues and provide the clams with nutrients. Giant clams are sessile and spend their adult lives attached to coral reefs or rocky substrates. They are filter feeders and also obtain a significant amount of their energy from their symbiotic algae.
