Southern Clams [Laevicardiinae]
Description
Laevicardiinae, or southern clams, represent a subfamily within the Cardiidae family. These bivalves are characterized by their smooth and often glossy shells, which can vary in color and pattern. Southern clams are found in colder southern waters, including those around the southern tip of South America, the southern coasts of Australia, and New Zealand. They prefer sandy or muddy substrates where they can bury themselves for protection. Like other members of the Cardiidae family, they are filter feeders and play important roles in their ecosystem as both prey and as contributors to the sediment and nutrient dynamics.
