Cockles [Cardiidae]
Description
Cardiidae, commonly known as cockles, are a family of marine bivalve molluscs. They are distinguished by their rounded shells that are heart-shaped when viewed from the end. Cockles live in sandy, muddy, and silty substrates, primarily in shallow marine waters. They are known for their ability to jump by flexing and straightening their foot, which helps them in avoiding predators. Cockles are filter feeders, consuming plankton and detritus from the water column.
