Sturgeons [Acipenser]

Description

Acipenser is a genus of sturgeons, known for their elongated bodies, heterocercal tail, rows of bony plates on their body, and snout with barbels located in front of the mouth. These fish are primarily found in the Northern Hemisphere, in both freshwater and marine environments. They are anadromous, migrating upstream to spawn in fresh waters but spending most of their lives in the sea. Species in this genus are important for their role in ecosystems and are also valued commercially for their meat and roe, which is processed into caviar.
