Gigantidas [Gigantidas]

Gigantidas
Description

Gigantidas is a genus of deep-sea mussels also belonging to the family Bathymodiolinae. This genus includes species that are often found in the vicinity of hydrothermal vents and cold seeps. Characterized by their relatively large size compared to other deep-sea mussels, Gigantidas species are also associated with chemosynthetic bacteria, relying on these symbionts for nutrition derived from the conversion of inorganic substances such as hydrogen sulfide or methane.
