Deep-sea Mussels [Bathymodiolinae]
Description
Bathymodiolinae is a subfamily within the Mytilidae family, known as deep-sea mussels. These mussels are found in extreme deep-sea environments, including hydrothermal vents and cold seeps. They possess unique adaptations for survival in such harsh conditions, including symbiotic relationships with chemosynthetic bacteria. These bacteria are housed in the mussels' gills and provide nutrients through the chemosynthesis of sulfur or methane, allowing the mussels to thrive far from the sunlit ocean surfaces where photosynthesis is possible.
