Epizoanthus [Epizoanthus]

Description

Epizoanthus is a genus within the family Epizoanthidae, encompassing a variety of sessile, colonial zoanthids. These organisms are known for their encrusting lifestyle, often found attached to other marine substrates, including sponges, algae, and benthic invertebrates. They possess a unique symbiotic relationship with marine invertebrates, notably embedding themselves on or around the host, sometimes to the point of enveloping it entirely. Their polyps are typically small, with a distinctive smooth column and an oral disk surrounded by tentacles. Epizoanthus species are distributed across various marine environments, from shallow reefs to deeper waters.
