Epizoanthids [Epizoanthidae]

Description

Epizoanthidae comprises a group of sessile, colonial zoantharians that are predominantly found in deep sea environments, but can also occur in shallower waters. These zoanthids are unique for their preference to settle on other marine organisms, including bivalves and crustaceans, often forming symbiotic or parasitic relationships. Epizoanthids have a robust appearance with their polyps embedded in a thick, fleshy coenenchyme. Their coloration is generally muted, featuring shades of brown, yellow, or green. Their ecological role includes contributing to the complexity of benthic communities and serving as habitat for various microorganisms.
