Common Limpets [Patella]

Description

Patella is the type genus of the family Patellidae, known commonly as true limpets. This genus includes species that are found on hard surfaces in the intertidal and subtidal zones of oceans, primarily in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Representatives of this genus are characterized by their conical shell, which can vary in color and pattern but typically has a strong, muscular foot underneath that adheres tightly to rocks. They are herbivorous, grazing on algae with a radula. The shape and structure of their shells help in withstanding wave action and desiccation during low tides.
