Borostomias [Borostomias]

Description

Borostomias is a genus in the family Astronesthidae, known for species with elongated bodies and significant jaws filled with sharp teeth. These deep-sea fish are adapted to life in the darkness of the ocean's mesopelagic to bathypelagic zones, using their bioluminescent capabilities to hunt. Borostomias species are distinguished by their unique jaw structure and the presence of a single, long barbel under the chin, which is tipped with a bioluminescent photophore to lure prey.
