Waryfishes [Astronesthidae]
Description
Astronesthidae, or waryfishes, are distinguished by their large mouths, significant sexual dimorphism, and advanced bioluminescent capabilities, with males often having a greater number and variety of photophores than females. These deep-sea fishes are predators, using their bioluminescence to attract prey. They inhabit pelagic zones of tropical and subtropical oceans, usually below 500 meters. Their diet includes small fish and crustaceans.
