American Sole [Achirus]
Description
Achirus is a genus of flatfish in the family Achiridae, commonly known as American soles. These soles are characterized by their asymmetric bodies with both eyes located on the right side. They inhabit sandy and muddy bottoms in shallow waters along the western Atlantic coast, from the USA to Brazil. They are known for their benthic lifestyle, often burying themselves in the substrate to ambush prey. Species within this genus exhibit cryptic coloration, blending seamlessly with their surroundings to avoid predators.
