Burbot [Lotidae]

Description

Lotidae, or the family of burbot, consists of demersal fish found in cold freshwater and marine environments of Europe, Asia, and North America. The family is unique within the order Gadiformes for having a single species, Lota lota, commonly known as the burbot. It is the only gadiform fish dwelling in fresh waters. Burbot are distinguished by their elongated bodies, single chin barbel, and preference for cold, deep lake or river habitats. They are nocturnal and are well known for their winter spawning behavior.
