Cusk [Brosme]
Description
Brosme is a genus within the family Lotidae, represented by the single species Brosme brosme, commonly known as cusk. Unlike the freshwater burbot, cusk are found in the cold marine waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. They have an elongated body similar to that of the burbot but differ in their marine habitat preferences. Cusk prefer rocky bottoms and steep slopes where they can find shelter and prey on invertebrates and smaller fish. They are characterized by their single long dorsal fin, a single barbel on the chin, and a unique broom-shaped tail, which distinguishes them from other members of the cod family.
