Burbot [Lota]
Description
Lota is the sole genus in the family Lotidae that is found in freshwater environments rather than marine, but it is included in this family due to its close taxonomic relationship with other genera within Lotidae. The genus is represented by a single species, Lota lota, commonly known as the burbot. This species is distinctive for its elongated, serpentine body, a single barbel on the chin, and a dorsal fin that stretches along much of its back. It is adapted to cold, oxygen-rich waters and is found in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs across northern Europe, Asia, and North America. Burbot are benthic feeders, preying on a variety of invertebrates and fish. They are unique among cod-like fish for spawning in winter under the ice.
