Lowfin Brotula [Polymixia lowei]
Description
The Lowfin Brotula, also a Beardfish species, is found in the western Atlantic Ocean, from North Carolina to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. Like its cousin, it prefers to inhabit muddy or sandy bottoms at depths of 93 to 1,280 meters. Its main distinguishing feature is a lower fin ray count than the Bearded Brotula. It is also generally smaller, with a maximum reported length of 30 centimeters.
