Description
The Glowbelly Lanternfish, Athorybia lucifer, is a species of lanternfish. This species is found in the Western Atlantic Ocean, from the Gulf of Mexico to Suriname. It is a mesopelagic species, living at depths of 200 to 700 meters during the day and rising to the surface at night. The Glowbelly Lanternfish is known for its photophores, which produce light and give the species its common name. It has a small, slender body with a large mouth and a pointed snout. Its coloration is generally dark with a silver belly.
