Burbot [Lota lota]

Description

The burbot is the only gadiform (cod-like) freshwater fish. It is also known as bubbot, mariah, freshwater ling, the lawyer, coney-fish, lingcod, freshwater cusk, and eelpout. The species is closely related to the marine common ling and the cusk. It is the only member of the genus Lota. The burbot is a 'demersal', or bottom feeder, and its diet includes a wide range of invertebrates and fish. It spawns during the winter and under the ice, a unique characteristic among freshwater fishes. Its habitats include large cold lakes and rivers.
