American Crocodile [Crocodylus acutus]
Description
The American Crocodile is a large marine reptile found primarily in coastal areas from South Florida to Venezuela and the Greater Antilles. The species prefers brackish water habitats such as mangroves, estuaries, and lagoons. Adult males can reach up to 20 feet in length, while females are slightly smaller. They are characterized by a long, narrow snout and a lighter coloration than other crocodile species. They are generally more timid towards humans compared to their alligator counterparts. The American Crocodile is an opportunistic predator, feeding primarily on fish, birds, and small mammals.
