American Crocodile [Crocodylus acutus]
Description
Crocodylus acutus, the American Crocodile, is found in the Caribbean, South, Central, and the southern tip of North America. It prefers brackish or saltwater habitats such as estuaries, mangroves, and coastal lagoons, making it one of the few crocodile species with a significant tolerance for marine environments. The American Crocodile is characterized by a more V-shaped snout compared with the U-shaped snout of alligators, and its lighter coloration. Though it is capable of living in saltwater, much of its life, including nesting and feeding, takes place in freshwater or brackish water areas.
