Turret limpets [Ansates]
Description
Ansates, previously known as Patinigera, is a genus within the Patellidae family, characterized by their unique turret-shaped shells. Unlike the typical conical shape of most limpets, the shells of Ansates species have a more cylindrical form, which helps in differentiating them from other genera within the same family. These limpets inhabit rocky shorelines and are adapted to grazing on the thin layers of algae covering the rocks. Their distinct shape allows them to cope with strong wave action, making them prevalent in exposed coastal areas.
