Spinycheek sleepers [Erotelis]
Description
Erotelis is a genus of fish within the Eleotridae family, known as spinycheek sleepers. The genus is identified by the presence of spines on the operculum (gill cover) and a somewhat compressed body. These small to medium-sized fish inhabit marine and brackish waters, mainly in the western Atlantic Ocean, from Florida to Brazil. They are often found in mangrove estuaries and similar shallow, sheltered environments.
