Spiny searobins [Prionotus]
Description
Prionotus, the spiny searobins, are known for the series of sharp, venomous spines on their gill covers, which they use for defense. These fish inhabit the western Atlantic Ocean, from shallow waters to depths exceeding 200 meters. They have the characteristic 'walking' behavior, using their pectoral fin rays to move along the bottom while searching for invertebrates and small fish. The vibrant colors and patterns on their fins are often displayed during courtship.
