Shrimpfishes [Aeoliscus]
Description
Aeoliscus is a genus of fishes within the family Centriscidae, commonly known as shrimpfishes or razorfishes. These marine fishes are characterized by their elongated, slender bodies, which are encased in bony plates. They are well adapted to their unique mode of life, swimming in a vertical position among seagrasses and other aquatic plants. This camouflage strategy helps them blend in with the surrounding vegetation, making it difficult for predators to spot them. Shrimpfishes feed on small crustaceans and plankton, using their tubular mouths to suck in food. They are found in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa to Samoa, and north to Japan.
