Orinoco Crocodile [Crocodylus intermedius]

Description

Crocodylus intermedius, commonly known as the Orinoco Crocodile, is a critically endangered species found in freshwater environments of the Orinoco River basin in Colombia and Venezuela. While primarily a freshwater species, its inclusion in the Crocodylus genus connects it to the broader adaptability of some members to marine environments. This species is characterized by a narrower and longer snout compared to other crocodiles, and it is one of the largest crocodile species, with some individuals reaching lengths of up to 6.6 meters (22 ft). Preservation efforts are critical for its survival, given its limited range and declining population.
