Ogcocephalus [Ogcocephalus]
Description
Ogcocephalus is the namesake genus of the batfish family, Ogcocephalidae, and is characterized by its wide, flat bodies and pectoral fins adapted for walking on the sea bottom. These fish are found primarily in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Atlantic, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Ogcocephalus species are known for their unusual method of feeding, where they use a chemical lure to attract prey within reach of their mouth. Their cryptic coloration allows them to blend into their surroundings, making them difficult to spot by both prey and predators.
