Limnocnida [Limnocnida]
Description
Limnocnida is a genus of freshwater jellyfish within the family Olindiidae, distinct from the more widely recognized genus Craspedacusta. Species in this genus are found in various freshwater habitats across Africa and Asia, indicating a broad ecological tolerance. Limnocnida jellyfish are characterized by their bell-shaped bodies which can reach sizes of up to a few centimeters in diameter. They possess numerous tentacles that emanate from the edge of their bell, used for capturing prey which typically consists of small aquatic organisms. Similar to other members of the Olindiidae family, Limnocnida species have a life cycle that comprises both a medusa (free-swimming) and a polyp stage, allowing them to adapt to different environmental conditions. Their presence in diverse freshwater systems makes them an interesting subject for ecological and evolutionary studies.
