Laternula [Laternula]

Description
Laternula is a genus within the family Isognomonidae, distinguished by its members' robust, thick shells that are more rounded compared to those of Isognomon. The genus is commonly found in muddy or sandy substrates in shallow waters of estuaries and mangrove swamps. These bivalves are adapted to a burrowing lifestyle, with a foot adapted to digging. Laternula species are also filter feeders and play a significant role in their ecosystems by filtering out suspended particles in the water, thus contributing to water clarity. Their shells are usually less colorful than those of Isognomon, often displaying more subdued hues.
