Lasiognathus [Lasiognathus]
Description
Lasiognathus is a genus of deep-sea anglerfishes in the family Thaumatichthyidae, characterized by their unusual and diverse structures of their esca (the lure appendage). Members of this genus exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, with females being larger and possessing the distinctive angling apparatus for which the family is known. The esca can vary greatly in shape and structure between species and is used to attract prey in the dark depths of their oceanic habitats. They are found in various parts of the world's oceans, usually at great depths where sunlight does not penetrate.
