Lamellibrachia [Lamellibrachia]
Description
Lamellibrachia is a genus of long-lived, cold-seep tubeworms that inhabit the ocean floor. Members of this genus are characterized by their ability to live in environments with low oxygen levels and high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas. They have a unique adaptation in the form of a symbiotic relationship with chemosynthetic bacteria, which enables them to derive energy from the oxidation of sulfides.
