Gulper Sharks [Centrophorus]
Description
Centrophorus is a genus of deepwater sharks in the family Centrophoridae, commonly known as gulper sharks. These sharks are characterized by their long, slender bodies, large green eyes adapted to deep-sea environments, and liver filled with squalene, making them buoyant. They are found worldwide in temperate and tropical seas, typically at depths from 200 to 2,500 meters. Gulper sharks are ovoviviparous, with females giving birth to relatively large, fully formed pups. Due to their deepwater habitats, they are seldom seen by humans but are vulnerable to deep-sea fishing operations.
