Gollumsharks [Gollum]

Description

Gollum is a genus within the family Pseudotriakidae, known as gollumsharks, inhabiting deep waters of the continental slopes. These sharks are characterized by their slender bodies, long tails, and relatively small size compared to other members of their family. The genus Gollum is distinguished by its unique physical features, including elongated nasal barbels near their mouths, which are thought to aid in the detection of prey, and the presence of luminescent organs which may be used for attracting prey or mates in the deep dark waters where they reside. Gollumsharks are benthic, living close to the ocean floor where they feed on small fish and invertebrates. Their reproductive strategies are not well-studied, but like many deep-sea sharks, they are presumed to have low reproductive rates. This genus contributes to the diversity of life in the deep-sea ecosystem, showcasing the adaptability of sharks to various oceanic environments.
