Giant Carpet Anemone [Stichodactyla]
Description
The Stichodactyla genus includes the well-known giant carpet anemones, which are large sea anemones that can reach impressive sizes, often exceeding 1 meter in diameter. They are characterized by their broad, flat, and sticky oral disc which lacks a distinct column below. These anemones are often vibrant in color, displaying hues of green, blue, pink, or a mix, making them a spectacular sight in their natural habitats. They have short, conical, and numerous tentacles that spread across their oral disc, aiding in their feeding habits. Giant carpet anemones are symbiotic with various marine species, most notably clownfish, which find shelter among their tentacles and in return may provide nutrients through their waste. This genus is found in shallow waters of the Indo-Pacific region, where they attach themselves to sandy or rubble substrates in lagoons and reef flats.
