Cossura [Cossura]

Description

Cossura is the type genus of the family Cossuridae within the class Polychaeta, comprising marine worms. These worms are characterized by their slender, thread-like bodies which are segmented. Members of the genus Cossura are benthic, living in burrows within soft sedimentary environments such as mud or sand. They are known for their deposit-feeding habits, consuming organic particles they encounter within the substrate. The body of Cossura species is divided into a prostomium (head), a trunk with numerous segments, and a pygidium (tail). They possess setae (bristle-like structures) which are used for locomotion and burrowing. The genus includes species found in a variety of marine habitats across the world, from shallow waters to deep-sea environments.
