Common limpets [Patella]
Description
Patella is the type genus of the family Patellidae, known commonly as the true limpets. These marine gastropod molluscs are characterized by their conical shell, which has been adapted to cling tightly to rocky surfaces. They are found in the intertidal zones of rocky shores and are known for their ability to withstand both the crashing waves and exposure to air during low tides. Members of this genus are grazers, feeding on algae scraped from the rocks with their radula. Their strong foot muscle and the shape of their shell help to create a vacuum effect, making it difficult for predators to dislodge them.
