Blubber Jellyfish [Catostylus]

Description

Catostylus is a genus within the Rhizostomatidae family, comprising the species commonly referred to as Blubber Jellyfish. These jellyfish are recognized by their large, dome-shaped bell and short, thick oral arms that hang beneath. The bell is often brightly colored, ranging from blue to pink, and is capable of a pulsating motion that propels the jellyfish forward. Catostylus species are found in warmer coastal waters, including those off Australia, Asia, and Africa. They are known for forming large aggregations, or blooms, which can impact local marine ecosystems and fisheries. Despite their size and numbers, Blubber Jellyfish stings are generally not harmful to humans.
