Root-Mouth Jellies [Rhizostomatidae]
Description
Rhizostomatidae, or root-mouth jellies, are a family of jellyfish known for their lack of tentacles and unique oral structure. Instead of the long, trailing tentacles found in most jellyfish, members of this family have multiple oral arms that extend from the center of the underside of the bell. These arms are used to feed on plankton and small particles in the water. Rhizostomatidae are found in warmer seas around the world and include species like the barrel jellyfish (Rhizostoma pulmo), which can be found in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
