Blind Sharks [Brachaelurus]
Description
Brachaelurus is a genus of sharks within the family Brachaeluridae, commonly known as blind sharks. They are called 'blind' sharks because they often close their eyes when taken out of the water. Members of this genus are found in the coastal waters of Australia. They are relatively small, benthic sharks, with broad, blunt snouts and large spiracles. Their coloration varies from grey to brown, often with patterns or spots that help them blend into their rocky reef and sandy habitats. They are nocturnal, spending the day hidden in crevices and becoming active at night to feed on a variety of small benthic organisms.
