Tongue soles [Cynoglossidae]
Description
Cynoglossidae, or tongue soles, are a distinctive family of flatfish named for their long, tongue-like shape. They are primarily found in the Indo-Pacific region, inhabiting sandy or muddy bottoms in shallow waters. Unlike other flatfish, tongue soles have both eyes on the left side and a straight lateral line. They are known for their ability to bury themselves in the substrate, leaving only their eyes exposed to watch for predators and prey.
