Stygiomysids [Stygiomysida]

Description

Stygiomysida, or stygiomysids, are a family known for their occurrence in unique and extreme environments, including deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold seeps. These environments are characterized by complete darkness, high pressure, and often, chemically rich waters. Stygiomysids have adapted to these conditions with specialized feeding strategies, including detritivory and symbiotic relationships with chemosynthetic bacteria. Their reduced eyes and enhanced sensory appendages help them navigate and locate food sources in their dark habitats.
