Stygiomysis [Stygiomysis]

Description

Stygiomysis is a genus of mysid crustaceans found in marine environments. Members of this genus are characterized by their small size, elongated bodies, and the presence of a unique tail fan composed of elongated uropods and a middle telson. They inhabit subterranean and cave waters, often in anchialine environments, which are coastal, saline waters connected to the underground freshwater. These mysids are adapted to life in darkness, showing typical troglomorphic features such as reduced pigmentation and eyes. Their diet primarily consists of detritus and small invertebrates. The distribution of Stygiomysis includes various geographic locations with suitable subterranean marine habitats.
