Hammerheads [Scopidae]
Description
Scopidae is a small family represented by a single species, the Hamerkop or Hammerhead stork. This bird is found in Africa, Madagascar, and Arabia in wetland habitats. It is known for its unique hammer-shaped head and crest, which gives it its name. The Hamerkop builds a massive nest, which is often used by other species as well. Despite its stork-like appearance, genetic studies have placed it closer to pelicans and herons.
