Southern hake [Urophycis brasiliensis]

Description

The southern hake is a species of phycid hake found in the Southwest Atlantic, from southern Brazil to Argentina. It is a demersal species that lives at depths between 10 and 800 m, but usually between 50 and 200 m. It has a long, slender body with a small head, and the color can vary from gray to brown. The southern hake feeds mainly on fish, but also on crustaceans and squids. It is commercially important in Argentina and Uruguay.
